Inspired by the timeless elegance of the Haitang flower, House of Haitang transforms an ageing 5-room HDB flat into a contemporary sanctuary for a couple in their fifties and their beloved cat.
Rather than replicating a traditional Chinese interior, the design reinterprets the quiet sophistication of Song Dynasty aesthetics through restrained forms, natural materials and spaces that celebrate everyday rituals.
The original layout was comprehensively reconfigured to better support the homeowners’ lifestyle. An existing bedroom and enclosed kitchen were combined to create an expansive tea and dining space, encouraging tea appreciation, floral arrangement and meaningful daily interactions.
The former dining area was repurposed as a study, while the original master bedroom was transformed into a spacious walk-in wardrobe with integrated storage, reflecting the couple’s passion for travel, collecting and organised living.
The Haitang motif serves as the home’s unifying design language, appearing in the entrance door, the signature rotating feature window and custom sliding doors leading to the master bedroom and bathroom. Carefully curated textured glass balances privacy with daylight while introducing layers of visual depth.
Complemented by handcrafted details, display shelving, lush greenery and a dedicated space for the family cat, the home embodies a contemporary interpretation of Song-inspired living—where culture, craftsmanship and daily life coexist in quiet harmony.
